Slate ("Slate," "we," "us") provides software that lets restaurants, bars, and other businesses manage digital menu boards, promotional displays, and media loops on screens they control. This policy explains what information we collect through our website and product, why we collect it, and what choices you have.
When you sign up, we collect your name, email address, business name, and a password (stored using industry-standard hashing, we never store or see your plain-text password). If you complete a pilot request or contact form, we collect whatever you enter there, typically your name, business name, email, and details about your screens.
To build and run your displays, we store the content you give us: menu items and prices, section names, promotional text, logos, brand colors, and any photos or video you upload for display loops. This content is yours (see Terms of Service, "Your Content"), we host it so your screens can show it.
Each physical screen you pair with Slate is identified by a device token, a randomly generated identifier, not tied to any personal information about who's near the screen. We log when a screen last checked in ("last seen") so your dashboard can show whether it's online, and basic technical details like screen resolution and orientation so your content displays correctly.
Subscription payments are processed by Stripe. We do not store your full credit card number, expiration date, or CVV on our own servers, Stripe handles that directly and provides us only with what's needed to manage your subscription (such as a billing status and the last four digits of your card, for your own reference).
Like most web services, our servers automatically log standard technical information when you use the dashboard or when a paired screen requests content: IP address, browser type, timestamps, and pages or endpoints accessed. We use this for security, troubleshooting, and understanding basic usage patterns, not for advertising.
Slate's screens are exactly that, screens. The player software that runs on a paired device has no access to a camera or microphone, and we don't build features that would give it one. We don't collect information about the people standing in front of a display, their movements, demographics, or behavior. If a future feature ever changed this, we'd update this policy and ask for your consent before turning it on, not after.
We do not sell your personal information or your business content, to anyone, for any reason. We share information only with:
We keep your account and content data for as long as your account is active. If you cancel, we retain your data for a reasonable period afterward in case you want to reactivate, then delete it. You can request full deletion of your account and all associated content at any time by emailing hello@slate.menu, we'll confirm once it's done. Deleting a screen or removing it from your account immediately invalidates that screen's device token, it can't pull your content anymore.
We use a minimal set of cookies, primarily to keep you logged into your dashboard session. We don't use third-party advertising or tracking cookies. If that changes in the future, we'll update this section and give you a way to control it.
We use industry-standard practices to protect your information, encrypted connections (HTTPS) everywhere, hashed passwords, and access controls limiting who can see account data. No system is perfectly secure, and we can't guarantee absolute security, but we treat this seriously and will notify affected users if we ever become aware of a breach involving your data, as required by law.
Slate is a business tool intended for use by adults operating a restaurant, bar, or similar business. It's not directed at children, and we don't knowingly collect information from anyone under 18.
Slate is operated from the United States, and your information may be processed and stored there. By using Slate, you consent to this transfer.
If we make material changes to this policy, we'll notify active account holders by email before the changes take effect, not just quietly update this page.
